Is Social Media Really Free?

I have heard so many people say, “Social media is free!” It is really?

If you were to compare social media to other marketing tactics, like TV, Radio or Print you might say yea, it’s free, there’s no cash outlay. My question still stands though. Is it really free? Not in my opinion!

I have always been taught that time is money. Your time is worth something.  Let’s analyze. If your time is worth something, and it takes time to effectively utilize social media to work for you and your business…then social media marketing is truly not free.

Before you jump in and start using social media to market your business wouldn’t it make sense to learn all you can from a professional in order for you to utilize your time effectively?  To make something happen that will benefit your company will take an investment of time.

Social media is only free if you think that your time is worth nothing.

The next time a web or marketing company tells you that getting into the social media is free, think about it. Those companies are thinking about themselves and do not understand your value.

  • Now don't get me started on Facebook. That does waste my time. However, my time is so precious and I do use Social Media. I have friends all over the world. For example, today Dolores commented on my blog about my husband's Alzheimer's. Her husband has the same desease. We regularly pray for each other. I think this is where Social Media serves best.

Hi Carol, thanks for your comment. If social media marketing is used properly, it will not be time wasted. That’s why we stated in the article, that sometimes it’s best to learn all you can from a professional before jumping in and doing it blindly. For example, do you have a Facebook busines page to promote your book? Or are you trying to do everything in your personal profile? If you are doing everything from your personal profile, you cannot separate the time you spend on your business, opposed to the time you spend catching up with friends and playing.

Your blog is not considered “social media”. Your Social Media is what broadcasts your blog story, so people know it’s there for them to read. Social media should be used very much like your real life networking, whether it be at Toastmasters, the Chamber or a regular networking group. The only difference being, the 3 I just mentioned is face-to-face, your social media is your networking in the virtual world – keystroke to keystroke. Both types of networking are vital to the success of your business endeavors.
