Yes it has happened again! FaceBook has opened the door for hackers to be able to retrieve the user’s information, that’s your information. (Read article on Fox News). Facebook has vowed to have this breach fixed by tomorrow (Sept. 27, 2011). I think the phrase, “A day late and a dollar short” sums this up well.
So what is a person to do?
The first and far most important thing to remember, is if you have your information on any Social Media platform, like FaceBook; you should only post information that you wouldn’t care if everyone in the world saw it. You do not have control of any of the Social Media sites – which means you really do not have control of the security of your information you post. You have to rely on the security that each of those sites offer.
So if you are one of the many that are complaining about your private information being used to harm you or someone else – STOP, it makes you sound foolish. You, afterall, are the ones that gave them that information to begin with!
I urge you to be cautious when filling out your profiles giving out too much personal information about yourself. Remember, not just in your profile do you need to be cautious; anything you post, can be used against you, or someone else.
Don’t air your personal information and/or your dirty laundry for the world to see.
The social media platforms are a good thing for both keeping in touch with family and friends and for promoting/giving brand awareness for your business. Just like anything, you need to use common sense.
Play it safe and have fun!
