Don’t Get Tricked!

Have you ever gotten a letter in email or snail mail that looks like a legitimate invoice for your domain name?  However, you don’t recognize the name of the company who it came from? If not, you probably will eventually get one. They just haven’t got to your name yet.

Who are these companies that do this and what are their motives for doing it?

The Companies

These are companies that have nothing better to do then track domain name expiration dates.  Once a domain name is 60 to 90 days out from the renewal date, these companies generate an invoice stating your domain name is about to expire, and that you’d better renew it now, before you lose it!!  They will send it to the person who is listed as the Registrant for the domain name. Their objective is for you to just pay the invoice and then they take control of your domain name and transfer it to their registrar company.  Is this legal? Well in my opinion, this is definitely working in the gray area. But your naivety or ignorance doesn’t make what they do illegal.
