What is website analytics? 

It’s the tool that collects, tracks, measures and reports internet data or website traffic  from your website. With this collection of data, changes can be made to a website for the purpose of optimizing a web page in order to draw more web traffic.

Not having a way to collect internet data or website traffic would be like not knowing how much money you have in your bank account.  With the lack of information you would not know where your strong and weak areas are within your website.  As a result, you would not be able to make the positive changes to your website which could increase your return on investment (ROI).

Why Have Website Analytics?

Collecting good website analytics data will give you a clearer picture as to how your website is performing and where your website traffic is going throughout your website.  But, better yet, it tells you where they are not going which enables you to make adjustments to those problematic areas.

The biggest challenge with all the collected data is the understanding of what it means.  Just counting the visitors coming to your website in not near enough.  You need to know where your visitors are coming from, what page they visit and what page they leave from.  Are they new or returning visitors? Or are they just robots and spiders from the search engines coming to your website?  How many people are just going to the home page of your website and leaving?  Why are they leaving, and not going deeper into your website?

This just scratches the surface of what website analytics can tell you about the functionality of your website.
